Specialist Programmes

All Ages

The 10-week Nurturing Programme is effective in universal settings. Professionals who have attended our Parent Group Leader Training deliver targeted support as part of specialist interventions such as adoption and fostering, working with parents in prison, working with Muslim families and parents whose children have special needs.

Parent Group Leader training for parents of children with a disability or special need

The Nurturing Programme has been delivered successfully in numerous special schools across the UK. Parents of children with a disability can face many additional challenges. We have collaborated with clinical psychologists from Ealing’s Service for Children with Additional Needs to develop this handbook, specifically for this group of parents. It is recommended that this handbook is used by Parent Group Leaders who have experience of working with children with disabilities and when all parents in the group have a child with a disability.

The adapted programme was originally piloted with parents of children attending the special schools in Ealing. The children had a wide variety of needs which included autistic spectrum disorders, physical and learning disabilities. Some of their disabilities were mild to moderate whilst others were profound.

All parents found the programme helpful and would recommend it to others and 90% reported that it had helped with their child’s behaviour.

The parents’ feedback demonstrated how much they benefited from meeting other parents and sharing their experiences and ideas. They also valued the new strategies they had learned and the positive impact these had on all relationships in the family, including with their partners and the siblings of the child with the disability.

Testimonials

"There is less shouting and more happiness and confidence at home – from my children and me, and my husband."

"I have changed the way I talk to my children and I am more calm and I listen properly to them. I also treat myself now and then for being a good parent."

Parent Group Leader training for Parents in Prison

The Family Links Nurturing Programme is being successfully delivered in a number of male and female prisons across the UK, impacting on family relationships, emotional health and positive parenting.

Family Links offers additional specialist training for practitioners working to support parents in prison or their families.

We focus on guidance and information on best practice in this specialist setting and building successful partnerships with prison staff and management. Parenting in a prison context brings its own priorities and sensitivities - and the programme has been adapted to meet these. In addition to the obvious benefits to both parents and children, it is also clear that the Nurturing Programme in a prison context often leads to improved relationships and cultures amongst prisoners.
