Parent Group Leader Training

What is it?

The Family Links training for parent group leaders offers a thorough introduction to the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programme for anyone working with parents and carers.

Who is it for?

If you are interested in offering the Parent Nurturing Programme to groups of parents, our four day Parent Group Leader Training is for you.  The training offers:

  • a thorough introduction to the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programme for anyone working with parents and carers.
  • sessions about the importance of facilitative approaches, both in group work and one-to-one support.
  • resources, including The Parenting Puzzle book for parents and the Nurturing Game for families.
  • the option of OCN accreditation for parents.

The 4-day training is designed for community professionals. People we have trained include health visitors, social workers, school nurses, youth offending teams, Sure Start teams, Children's Centre staff.

It emphasises the importance of facilitative approaches, both in group work and one-to-one support. To date Family Links has 2585 active parent group leaders in the UK (July 2008).

The aims of the training are:

  • to introduce the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programme
  • to link the Nurturing Programme to the development of emotional literacy and emotional health
  • to offer experience of the Nurturing Programme at a personal and professional level
  • to share expertise and experience
  • to encourage a reflective approach
  • to demonstrate supportive facilitation and the role of process as well as content
  • to build confidence in using the NurturingProgramme effectively and enjoyable
  • to offer practice in facilitating the training
  • to ensure that trainees meet Family Links' authorisation criteria
  • to familiarise trainees with Nurturing Programme resources

The training reflects the Four Constructs on which the Nurturing Programme is based. Family Links trainers expect to demonstrate the Four Constructs in action throughout the training. For more information on the basis of the Nurturing Programme click here.

Trainees are involved in many activities, some of which are personally as well as professionally challenging, stimulating and rewarding. Everyone working with the Nurturing Programme needs to be reasonably comfortable with the emotional issues in their own lives, as well as those they may encounter in the lives of people they support.

The training is designed to be safe, informal and enjoyable.
