Training for Early Years

Staff

The Family Links training for Early Years staff offers a thorough introduction to the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programme for all those working in Early Years settings and hoping to adopt an emotionally literate approach to promoting positive behaviour in very young children. The approach particularly emphasises the importance of facilitative approaches, both in group work with children and in one-to-one support with adults.

This training is offered as a 2-day course, as 4 half-days or as 6 two-hour sessions. An extra session is offered for staff wishing to lead Circle Time groups.

The training reflects the Four Constructs on which the Nurturing Programme is based. Family Links trainers expect to demonstrate the Four Constructs in action throughout the training.

Trainees are involved in many activities, some of which are personally as well as professionally challenging, stimulating and rewarding. Everyone working with the Nurturing Programme needs to be reasonably comfortable with the emotional issues in their own lives, as well as those they may encounter in the lives of people they support.

Please read our information on training for Schools and Early Years for more details.

Advisors and area managers

The new Family Links Early Years training for trainers offers a thorough introduction to the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programme for trainers supporting staff who work in Early Years settings. It is designed for Early Years advisors and area managers.

The 8-day training scheme consists of:

Day 1-3 Induction training
The training explores in depth the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programmes for schools and parents. It offers training in facilitation skills.

The training is experiential throughout, helping to build a coherent team and contributing to the personal as well as professional development of team members.

Day 4 - 5 Two-day observation of Early Years inset training
This training, led by Family Links trainers, offers the opportunity for trainees to experience the Nurturing Programme in context, and to encounter the issues, problems and challenges that emerge during training.

Day 6 Further Induction training
A chance for team members to practise their skills in delivering the Nurturing Programme training within a supportive atmosphere.

Day 7-8 Two-day initial delivery of Early Years training
Trainers in training lead the two days in an Early Years setting, supervised and supported by Family Links trainers.

The aims of the training are:

  • to introduce trainees to the principles and practice of the Nurturing Programme
  • to link the Programme to the development of emotional literacy and emotional health
  • to offer experience of the Programme at a personal and professional level
  • to share expertise and experience
  • to encourage a reflective approach
  • to demonstrate supportive facilitation and the role of process as well as content
  • to build confidence in using the Programme effectively and enjoyable
  • to offer practice in facilitating the training
  • to ensure that trainees meet Family Links' authorisation criteria
  • to familiarise trainees with Programme resources
