The Nurturing Programme and the DCFS (DfES) Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL)
Family Links welcomes the DCFS (DfES) SEAL curriculum, which endorses and supplements the Nurturing Programme's focus on "developing children's social, emotional and behavioural skills: a whole-curriculum approach" (Primary National Strategy 2003, p.8). The Family Links Nurturing Programme is mentioned in the guidance booklet for SEAL (pages 66 and 73). The Programme provides an emotional literacy and emotional health programme for children, their parents and carers, and whole school staff.
SEAL is a resource "intended to supplement, not replace, the effective work that many schools and settings are already doing to develop Social, Emotional and Behavioural Skills". Its seven annual themes draw on five domains - self-awareness, managing feelings, motivation, empathy and social skills. The activities and resources provided can equally well be used to enhance the Nurturing Programme's well-established Four Constructs - empathy, self-awareness/self-esteem, positive discipline and appropriate expectations.
These concepts form sound foundations for an emotionally literate and emotionally healthy individual, family, school and community. Teachers, teaching assistants and lunchtime supervisors comment that children engaged in the Nurturing Programme increase their self-motivation and sense of social responsibility as well as developing in the Four Construct areas. Notably, children develop an understanding of the impact their feelings have on their behaviour.
