The Nurturing Programme for Parents is a 10-week course for groups of up to 10 parents/carers facilitated by two trained parent group leaders.

The Parent Programme topics build on parents' existing skills and introduce many helpful ways of improving family relationships and managing the behaviour of children of all ages. The Programme is based on the Four Constructs, the building blocks of the Nurturing Programme.

The Parent Programme improves parents' confidence and skills, encouraging them to maintain effective positive discipline while understanding their own and their children's emotional needs.

Parents attending the 10-week course learn to:

  • recognise the value of consistency and set clear boundaries
  • maintain positive discipline
  • respect their own and their children's emotional needs
  • become a more confident, understanding parent

Who is the Parent Programme for?

The Parenting Programme is for all parents! The Nurturing Programme helps develops relationship skills in families from all social backgrounds whatever their level of need and it is effective both for parents who are already confident with their role and as an intervention.

Groups are run in many different settings - in schools, as evening classes, for company employees, in residential care homes and in prisons. Groups are held every week over 10 weeks with 2 facilitators and usually with a maximum of 10 parents.

Family Links works in partnership with many different organisations in both the statutory and voluntary sectors. The skill of the facilitators who lead the groups is crucial, and Family Links provides four-day long training for all Parent Group Leaders.

Feedback from the Parent Programme

“I am more confident as a parent and as a person.  I have now got clear boundaries for my daughter and can handle anything parenthood can throw at me.  Instead of battling with one another, we have fun, enjoyable, relaxed times.”

“We became more organised as a family, we understood each others needs due to the family rules - for example, we don’t shout, we listen to each other.  I am confident as a parent and most of all happy as a family!  Thank you.”

“The group has been a great help.  I was cynical about the course before I joined but soon grew to being part of a team.  Great group.  Great course.  Will miss the sessions”

“You really felt supported and listened to and that you’re not being taught how to be a parent”
