Richard Pring London Marathon 2008Professor Richard Pring celebrated his 70th birthday in a very unique way this year, by running the London Marathon in aid of Family Links. On Sunday 13 April Professor Pring made a really heroic effort for Family Links - and he still needs your help to raise money. Richard is a Family Links trustee and a keen supporter of our work to build parenting and relationship skills for parents, children and young people. Proceeds from his run will help Family Links continue to pioneer new work with vulnerable young people and their parents. In particular the money raised will go towards a new adaptation of the Nurturing Programme for young people aged between 12 and 18 and their parents. In autumn 2007 work with a group of 8 teenage girls and their 5 mums resulted in an amazing growth in confidence and trust between the parents and young people. At the end of the course, 3 young people came off the child protection register. According to the group leader: “[The mum] talked about the teen programme repeatedly and said if she hadn’t been on the course she couldn’t have done it [had her children taken off the child protection register] she had learnt so much and it had helped their communication and …. had a greater understanding of feelings .She felt more able to cope with her younger child’s behaviour also and it had made her teen more confident and able to cope with the things that had happened….Each family has been through a journey on this programme and the changes are miraculous.” This was the 4th time that Richard has run the London Marathon and incredibly it was his 23rd Marathon altogether. Richard completed the marathon in an amazing 4 hours 50 minutes.
