Frequently Asked Questions
What do you do?
Family Links' aim is to help everyone get the best out of school and family life. We are dedicated to promoting emotional wellbeing, relationship skills and positive behaviour through the Nurturing Programme. Family Links is a national registered charity training people to deliver the Programme. Read Personal Accounts from the people who we have worked with to find out more.
What is the Nurturing Programme?
A 10-week course relevant to all children and the adults responsible for their upbringing: parents and carers, professionals supporting families, staff in schools and in pre-schools. The Nurturing Programme develops communication and social skills, reduces abuse and neglect and encourages relationships that give children an emotionally healthy springboard for their lives and their learning. It does this by offering simple, yet very effective, tools for managing and understanding emotions and behaviour. It is based on four constructs, arising out of research undertaken in the 1970s by psychologist Dr. Stephen J. Bavolek, a pioneer in the development of family education in the United States.
What training do you offer?
We train people to use the Nurturing Programme in schools and with parents. Please see our Training section for full details. Our school training includes training staff in primary schools and in Early Years settings. In addition, we train local authority teams to train others. You can also get training on Parent Support Skills. Parent Group Leader training is offered at our courses in Oxford. Alternatively, if you have a group of up to 16 people who would like to get trained, we can deliver the training in your area at a time that is convenient for you. Please contact us to enquire about this option.
How can I book myself into Parent Group Leader training?
Please email Jane with your contact details, the type of training you are interested in and possible dates.
How can I arrange training for my school?
Contact your local Area Co-ordinator. Alternatively, if you are part of a cluster of schools who would like to get trained in an area we don’t yet have an Area Co-ordinator in, please contact us for more details.
How much does your training cost?
For costings to train Parent Group Leader facilitators, please click here. To enquire about the cost involved in training schools, please contact your nearest Area Co-ordinator.
Do you run parent groups?
We do not run parent groups ourselves but train others to do so. cCick here for details on how to find your nearest parent group. To gain help and advice with parenting, you can purchase a copy of our highly recommended parenting handbook, The Parenting Puzzle.
Do you offer Open College Network (OCN) accreditation?
Yes. The Nurturing Programme for Parents has OCN Accreditation Levels 1 & 2.
What is emotional literacy?
Emotional literacy is being able to know and manage our emotions, motivate ourselves, recognise emotions in others and have good relationships.
